Spices Restaurant, The Peninsula Manila

"The cuisine of seven Asian countries - India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, China and the Philippines - is on offer at Spices, and the interiors also reflect the influences of these varied cultures. The restaurant is divided into two areas: the more "formal" main dining area and the glass-enclosed pavilion, with a relaxing view of the outdoor pool and garden. Asian objets d'art, tempera paintings by Filipino expressionist master Ang Kiukok, and a tinkling marble fountain add to its charm." - from Manila Peninsula site
Spices simply is exquisite!!! Exotic lovely decors , eclectic menu and delicious food, superb service, a relaxing ambiance...

We ordered for 3 different cuisine... and all is good.

Roti Canai - Malaysia P155
Rau Xao - Vietnam - Stir fried veggies with garlic and ginger P430

Nali Roghan Josh -Lamb shank cooked in gravy with red chili - India P790

71 years old cab driver...

In the cab, I was wondering about the driver’s age. Later, as he was driving me to my home, he made some guess on how old I am and start conversing with me; So, he was a retired lieutenant from Philippine army and is now enjoying his pension, yet still driving a cab to exercise... And he is 71 years old and had 2 wives and 9 children, his youngest is 18 years old and he has a 19 years old girlfriend that kept him alive.... Whoa!

I was Bewildered! Anyway he said that the girl's family was very poor and he gave 50,000 php to her parents and then everything was ok... he said that their relationship is more that a year now and still they're very sweet to each other; he see to it that he is always fresh and clean whenever their dating. Geeesssh!

Lest, you're wondering about his guess to my age - it was 16.... Hmmmm ;-p

Aubergine Restaurant and Patisserie

It was Friday night past 9pm, we have made no reservation and don't know where to go... Tada! come up with  Aubergine(good thing they were able to accommodate us that time).  Aubergine reads aw.ber.jeen is a French name of eggplant.

Aubergine serves sophisticated cuisines in a very warm and inviting  atmosphere. Interiors are modern and stylish with a floor-to-ceiling wine cellar that divides the bar and the patisserie shop that added to its elegant ambiance; staff were efficient and courteous throughout the meal, very very  professional...

Our meal started off with complimentary bread served with butter and mashed eggplant filling followed by a  tuna appetizer(2nd pix),compliments of  the chef.
For appetizer we ordered for strange but delicious  melted french brie(1st one in pix below). P390- It is served on grilled watermelon, topped with watercress salad tossed in raspberry dressing, walnut oil and chinese truffles.
Soup- I had wild mushroom froth with truffle espuma.P260 which is very very tasty and mushroomy, just the way i like;while others had king prawn bisque with souffled seafood canneloni (3rd pix from left).P290 -  I personally dislike the richness of bisque here... too rich!

Our main course 2nd row from left to right: Pan fried Norwegian salmon.P760; Trio of meat of poultry. P1180; Baked Pesto  & horseradish crusted Lapu-Lapu fillet.P660; Roasted wagyu beef tri tip(my food).P980. - Everything we order were cooked and presented to perfection plus the bottle of merlot from chile that complimented well in our food.

For dessert we have have the chocolate cake fondue  which is choco-luscious in every way. And oh they gave us complimentary dessert too,  composed of macaroons and chocolates....

It cost a lot, but experienced was nevertheless wonderful, I was impressed, they are too :D

So far it is my restaurant of the year.

Pepper lunch

I always want to try pepper lunch since its opening but I really hate long lines.... Chance- It was almost 4 PM on a Sunday and we haven’t had our lunch, a little tired from shopping with Tere and Roly; and we were really hungry! Off we went to Rockwell to have our Pepper lunch.

Pepper lunch is a do it yourself steakhouse chain. First off we have to line up (good thing it was 4PM), order and pay in the counter like any other fast food chain, and then wait a few minutes for our orders...

Roly and I ordered their best seller, the beef pepper rice meal while Tere ordered for chicken pepper rice without the pepper - both for P235 (comes with choice of soda/juice), P198 if no drink. After a few minutes, a sizzling iron plates were delivered to us by their friendly staff, she told us some instructions on how to cook, pointing to their secret ingredients for more flavorful meal- honey brown sauce & garlic soy sauce.

The beef pepper steak came with thinly sliced raw beef, rice, corn, onion leaves, peppered butter and sprinkled roasted black pepper. It also came with an easy paper instruction wrapped around the sizzling plate. Well the secret is simple, mix and mix - like what was written in the instruction “The more you mix them up, the more delicious "Pepper Rice" you get!!! Why? You will see it!” And so we witnessed it - our mishmash were TASTYriffic.

Overall, we enjoyed our late lunch in pepper lunch then continued with more shopping smelling like peppers rice - yeah the whiff sticks ;-)

SALA restaurant

SALA is a small cozy restaurant in the heart of Makati city. Despite of its location (nearing Ayala and Makati Ave.), it maintains serenity and sophistication which makes it a truly romantic place.

Our scrumptious dinner were served by someone who shows aptitude of service, respectful, polite, attentive and well-knowledge.

Our meal started with complimentary freshly baked bread which was being served in a nice steel tray by their attentive waiters.

Followed by a complimentary bruschetta with tasteful creamy l filling with herb cream cheese that tickles our appetite..

Roasted duck breast on parsnip hash with braised Puy lentils and apple jus. P980

Red wine and thyme poached angus beef tenderloin with horseradish potato cake. P1420

Spice crusted tuna steak with roast vegetable salad. herbes and lemon saffron dressing .P820

Oh la la! The ambiance, the service and the food are remarkable... but just one thing I seem to find the price exorbitant… Be ready to spend P1500/pax.(approx.)

Charming Baldemor: Food photography

I was invited to Lime 88 event last May 26, 2008; Introduction of Charming Baldemor as the country’s prime food photographer. I was able to witness how she and her food stylist consistently paid close attention to details… Here's a sample pix taken from Charming Baldemor multiply site (I hope you don't mind).

Anyway here’s feature release from Tes Lariosa:

BALDEMOR TACKLES NEW MEDIUM, EXPLORES TECHNOLOGY

True artistry indeed runs in the blood with the famous Baldemor family hailing from Paete, Laguna as one scion claims to make a name for herself in the digital arts, particularly photography and digital imaging. Charming Baldemor Photography and Digital Imaging is everything and more as the company carries the significant name of its proprietor and the well-known surname of some of the country’s highly-respected and favored artists.

Inspired with a vision of making a mark as an artist and a professional, Charming Baldemor took her artistry where her name has yet to be known. With blessings from her artist parents, Charlie and Evelyn, Charming started the company in 2000 armed only with an artist’s trained eye and the knowledge she gathered under the tutelage of experts, namely, Dominique James, Ibarra Deri and Mark Floro. Then located in Legazpi Village, Makati City, Charming Baldemor Photography and Digital Imaging started off with just a few known clients, with no specific requirements as to the type of photography needed.

But as the company grew in expertise and Ms. Baldemor herself found the need to expand her know-how in the field, a more focused professional services company evolved. Charming Baldemor Photography and Digital Imaging offers:

  • Commercial Photography (Fashion, Portrait, Product, Food)
  • Creative and Digital Imaging
  • Corporate and Business Graphics
  • Coaching and Mentoring Programs

“Although we are quite flexible with our services, my main passion lies in Food Photography,” Ms. Baldemor interjects. “I feel it challenges me as a photographer and as an artist as well. The attention to detail, light and shadows is part of what makes Food Photography an art in itself.”

Ms. Baldemor started her training using oil as medium. Her clientele includes Dentista, Inc., Chef d’Angelo and St. Paul’s College, Pasig. For pricing and rate card, please call Charming Baldemor at (+63917) 882-8746.

Manos Greek Taverna

We stop over Tagaytay's Manos Greek Taverna for lunch one summer weekend... The taverna can be found along roadside of Tagaytay but without the famous taal view; it is simple and unpretentious with blue and white colors (from walls to interiors) which gave us an authentic GREEKy feel. It is not air-conditioned where one can savor the hotness or coldness of natural Tagaytay breeze.

Here's our picture with the owner Manos (in the middle), who is readily entertaining/talking to customers...

For food...

Tzatziki dip.P90 - Is served with bread basket and a dip which compose of yogurt, garlic and olive oil.

Gyros- souvlaki shawarma.P90 - Just like ordinary beef shawarma with potatoes tomato and onion Cabbage rolls - Rice and minced meat wrapped around a cabbage; it taste like our very own bulalo dish over rice.

Grilled Lamb - served with rice, fries and mixed veggies. Unfortunately the meat was not so tender and I found the cut so thin...
While dining here, I can't help but to compare it to Cyma which I like better, Our overall dining experience was ok plus the fact that we only paid est. P200/pax.

Gilak by hussein

Persiana in greenbelt 3 is gone but another Persian resto took place, Gilak by Hossein.

This is similar to Hossein’s family resto (which is well-known for its Indian, Arabian, and Persian dishes) but with a different name; according to our server Gilak is the place where the owner (Hossein) came from.

The place is prim and soothing with a touch Persian/Indian feel, service is impeccable and food is fantastic, but I'm a bit sneering about the price - a meal with drinks would cost around P800/pax.

Chelou Barg Kebab.P570. - There's something about the Persian food which I truly enjoy.... must be the buttered rice or the appetizing smell of kebab or must be the grilled red tomato. The tenderloin itself was juicy and tasty, it was cooked the way I want it- "medium hotness"; My meal was satisfying, although it could have had much better if it comes with with onion/yogurt sauce...

Buon Giorno, Tagaytay

At long last, after hearing much rave about the place -finally Buon Giorno.

Buon Giorno means good morning in Italian. It is an Italian restaurant located within serene place called Tagaytay cliffhouse. The place offers calming and nice view of Tagytay scenery and fresh air. Ambiance here is warm and cozy; service is good but what I really really enjoyed most is the food...

Crema De Fungi.P168- really comforting with fresh wild mushroom.
Fritto Misto de Mare.P280.00- Made of mixed fried oceans bounty, there's nothing really fancy about this appetizer but it was quite satisfying to munch while chit chatting.
Risotto Crimoso con salmone affumicto e asparagi .P252.
The risotto wasn't perfect but it was rich and creamy, the smoked salmon is so flavorful.
Ribeye steak was big and juicy, it was served together with potatoes and mixed veggies and gravy for P554, it was worth it.
Will be back for more...

Oks Manoks Bacolod Inasal

Oks Manok is a small inexpensive inasal house in Pioneer center, it was introduced by a dear friend way way back....Since I was craving for chicken Inasal the last time, off we went...

A pecho pak (chicken breast) meal would cost P124 with inclusion of garlic rice, garlic soup and iced tea while the paa (chicken legs) meal would cost P119. I wonder why most of Inasal houses here in Manila called it paa (feet) and not hita (legs). Anyway chicken serving was big and tasty. Their soup is garlicky appetizing.

Donini posing with his pechopak meal with a big smile...

And, this sizzling garlic cheesy mushroom was very good and cost P85 only. MMMMMmmmm

If ever you're around/near the area you might give it a try ;-)

Scoozi cucina Italiana

I remembered ranting about scoozi not so long ago... While chatting with Chef Archie Juanta 2 Fridays ago, he asked me about my opinion about Scoozi in RCBC; Overtly I told him my about my disappointment, I tried it once but didn't like it and have no plans of eating there again ... In the course of conversation he mentioned that it has a new chef and that we should try it out again...

Believing one of my fave chefs .read. Chef Archie, we tried it again... Hmmmm, surprisingly, the food tasted way way way BETTER than before, yet with slightly higher price. Pasta cost P80 while the main meal with two sidings is from P125-150. Not bad e?... we’ll be having our lunch there again and again… Good job chef Cris(new chef)!

L'Opera Ristorante Italiano

After hearing and reading so much rave about this place, I finally got to dine-in at L’ Opera... The place lived up to my expectations; Ambiance is very Italian, from the murals of wall to the music being played- quaint, warm and cozy. Menu is pretty extensive, with typical Italian dishes and aperitifs/wines presented/written in Italian but with English description. Service was exceptional....

While waiting for our order, a complimentary bread basket with 3 types of dip (salsa, liver spread and butter) was presented....

To start up, we ordered for beef carpaccio(Carpaccio di Filetto di Manzo con Rucola alla Toscana).P360- The thinly sliced raw beef which I found smelly was presented with parmigiano and fresh greens. It was ok but I honestly didn't like it and certainly will not recommend this...

We asked for split order, so what you can see in the picture is half order of our main course.... Carre’ d’agnello ala Romana in Salsa di Pomodoro o all’ aceto Balsmico e Rosmarino or in other word grilled lamb chops. P680 and and Spaghetti alle Vongole al Pomodoro o al Vino Bianco.P340
The lamb chop has a unique flavor that I found sooooooo tasty, tender and juicy,it was complemented well with our baby clam angel hair pasta.

Zigurrat

Zigurrat means food temple... It is a unique restaurant in the heart of Makati (near red light district) which serve diverse cuisines - Indian, Mediterrenean, African and mideast dishes. The place is small and simple with colorful and detailed interiors showcasing of Islamic/Arabic arts. With open area where you can enjoy fresh air(?) or have some shisha/hookah or just enjoy their delectable dishes in their air-conditioned area.

Menu is presented in a gazette (news paper) with amazingly over 300 dishes on it.... Our food adventure starts with Mezzo mezze. P300 - four favorite mezzes served on a special mediterrenean tile includes hummus, mutabbal, jazac, mahroussa and three pieces of khobiz.

Jordanian rice.
P90- These basmati rice cooked just right, with butter, vermecelli and almonds - it is simply amazing.

Couscous T*faya lamb.P325- The lamb is juicy; taste like adobo to me with a twist of honey...

Ethiopian Chicken We't.P375 - Chicken dish served in chicken porcelain platter/jar- Cute! These dish is very tasty a little spicy with a hint of butter and curry... YUM!
Small platter. P285 - contains mixed kebabs such as chicken tika and beef kuftemiz with grilled tomato. I would say that their kebabs was really tasteful

Oh, Zigurrat is truly a very nice hangout place and they're open 24 hours. NICE!
